If you were planning to come to Australia on a Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462), there has been an important new development.

Australia has now paused first Work and Holiday visa applications for most countries subject to annual caps.

The 2026–27 Work and Holiday program opened on 2 July 2026, but strong demand means applications for many participating countries have already been temporarily paused.

So, what does this mean if you were planning your move to Australia?

If you don’t want to wait for applications to reopen, it may be worth exploring whether studying in Australia on a Student visa (subclass 500) could be a suitable alternative for your plans.

According to the latest information published by the Australian Department of Home Affairs, first Work and Holiday visa applications are currently paused for most countries participating in the capped subclass 462 program.

Countries currently affected include:

  • Argentina
  • Austria
  • Brazil
  • Chile
  • Czech Republic
  • Greece
  • Hungary
  • Israel
  • Luxembourg
  • Malaysia
  • Mongolia
  • Papua New Guinea
  • Poland
  • Portugal
  • Singapore
  • Slovak Republic
  • Slovenia
  • Spain
  • Switzerland
  • Thailand
  • Uruguay

Other countries may also be affected as application statuses can change throughout the program year.

China, India and Vietnam operate under the Work and Holiday visa ballot system, while Indonesia is also transitioning to a ballot process.

Only a small number of capped countries currently remain open for first Work and Holiday visa applications.

Don't Want to Wait? Consider Studying in Australia

Work and Holiday Visa vs Student Visa – What’s the Difference?

It is important to understand that a Student visa is not simply a replacement for a Work and Holiday visa.

The two visas have different purposes.

The Work and Holiday visa is designed primarily for young people who want to have an extended holiday in Australia while undertaking short-term work and limited study.

A Student visa, on the other hand, is intended for people whose primary purpose is studying in Australia.

Therefore, if you are considering a Student visa, you should choose a course that genuinely suits your previous education, professional background and future goals.

Can You Work While Studying in Australia?

Student visa holders are able to work under limited work hours in Australia while completing their studies, subject to the work conditions attached to their visa.

This can provide an opportunity to gain an Australian qualification while also gaining work experience and supporting yourself during your stay.

However, you must continue to meet your student visa requirements and maintain your studies throughout your course.
