Australia has introduced another change to international education, temporarily suspending certain new applications for providers and courses for international students.

The measure forms part of the Government’s broader efforts to strengthen the integrity and quality of Australia’s international education and Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector.

But what exactly has changed, and does it affect international students who are already studying or planning to study in Australia?

What Has Changed?

The Australian Government has temporarily suspended new applications to the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) for Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS) registrations and courses.

The suspension applies from 19 May 2026 until 19 May 2027.

This means that, during this period, affected VET providers cannot submit certain new applications to become registered to deliver courses to international students or add new courses to their existing CRICOS registration.

Importantly, this is not a ban on international education or on existing VET courses.

Registered education providers can generally continue delivering the courses they are already approved to offer to international students.

Why Has Australia Introduced the Suspension?

The Government introduced the measure to address integrity concerns in the VET sector, including poor-quality providers and rapid growth in certain study areas. The 12-month suspension allows ASQA to increase scrutiny and maintain education standards.

Can Colleges Still Offer Their Existing Courses?

Yes. Registered providers can continue offering their existing CRICOS-approved courses. The suspension mainly affects new CRICOS applications and the addition of new courses, so international students still have access to existing study options.

Does This Affect Current International Students?

Current international students can continue studying their existing CRICOS courses. However, fewer new VET courses may become available during the suspension, so students should check a course’s CRICOS registration before making study or visa plans.

What Does This Mean for Future International Students?

Australia continues to offer many CRICOS-registered courses to international students. However, choosing the right provider and course is increasingly important.

Before enrolling, consider whether the course is CRICOS registered, suitable for your background and career goals, and aligned with your future plans in Australia.

Your course choice should be based on genuine education and career goals, rather than simply extending your stay in Australia.
