If you’re dreaming about a place to enhance your yoga skills or to become a certified yoga instructor, two incredible destinations usually come to mind: Byron Bay and Bali. Each offers its own charm, but Byron Bay stands out as a truly exceptional place to immerse yourself in authentic, holistic yoga studies.
Byron Bay
If you’re looking for nature, peace of mind, safety, and a clean environment, Byron Bay is an ideal choice. Known for its stunning landscapes, relaxed lifestyle, strong sense of community, and excellent public health standards, Byron offers a serene and healthy setting for both study and everyday life.

Bali
If you’re after energy, crowds, vibrant streets, and a tropical vibe, Bali is the place to be. With its lively atmosphere, bustling markets, and sunny weather, it’s perfect for those who love excitement and adventure.
Bali vs. Byron Bay - Visa Options
Bali
If you want to study yoga in Bali, a Short Course Visa (C9) is needed for short, non-degree courses, while a Limited Stay Visa (VITAS) is required for longer programs. Both require sponsorship from a recognised Indonesian institution.
Tourist visas (B211/B211A) are not suitable for study or teaching, and while on a study visa in Bali, you are not allowed to work, including teaching yoga.
The process starts with a study permit from your sponsor, followed by the VITAS, which is then converted to a KITAS for your stay.
Byron Bay
Australia is a popular choice for international students. To study full-time, you’ll usually need a Student Visa (Subclass 500) and a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) from a registered education provider.
Tourist visas are not suitable for ongoing study. The Student Visa allows you to live in Australia for the length of your course and includes part-time work rights during study periods, with full-time work allowed during scheduled breaks.
Many students choose to work with education or migration professionals to ensure a smooth enrolment and visa application process.
Training Quality & Teaching Standards
While Bali has many retreats and programs, Byron Bay is renowned for its high training standards, accredited courses, and experienced educators who have shaped Australia’s yoga landscape for decades. Many schools emphasise tradition, anatomy, philosophy, and teaching methodology at a depth that gives graduates confidence and international recognition
The Environment: Nature Without the Crowds
Bali is tropical and colourful, but it can also be busy, humid, and heavily touristic. Byron Bay, on the other hand, gives you breathtaking beaches, national parks, and quiet spaces without the crowds. It’s the ideal environment to study deeply, slow down, and reconnect with yourself.

Lifestyle & Community
Byron Bay’s wellness culture is genuinely woven into the community. You’ll find organic cafés, local artisans, surfing, meditation circles, and a grounded, friendly atmosphere. It’s easy to build connections, feel at home, and maintain a healthy routine — something that can be more challenging in Bali’s busier tourist areas.
So, Byron Bay or Bali?
Both destinations can be wonderful, but if you’re looking for:
