As of July 1, 2023, Australia will re-introduce work restrictions for student visa holders. International students will be permitted to work up to 48 hours per fortnight. This comes after a period of relaxed restrictions throughout the pandemic, and a complete removal of restrictions in January 2022 to address workforce shortages.

The previous cap of 40 hours per fortnight will be increased to 48 hours.  Masters by research and doctoral degree students will not be affected by the reintroduction of work restrictions.

International students, other than those that are studying masters by research or doctoral degree will be affected by the new restrictions.  The dependants of Master and Doctoral degree students and their dependents will be able to continue to work without any limitations.

Will the new student work limitations apply to all types of work?

Yes, the work limitation will apply to all types of work regardless of the sector of the type of work.

The decision to reintroduce work restrictions is aimed at ensuring that international students focus on obtaining a quality education while still being able to support themselves financially and contribute to Australia’s workforce needs. With a cap of 48 hours per fortnight, students will have enough time to gain valuable work experience, while still being able to manage their studies.

It’s important to note that students must balance their studies and work commitments, even though there is some flexibility in the number of hours they can work.  International students need to maintain their course enrolment, ensure satisfactory course attendance, and ensure satisfactory course progress. Failure to meet these conditions may result in students being in breach of their visa conditions.
