If your Work & holiday Visa is about to expire and you don’t want to leave Australia right now as there is still plenty more for you to do and explore then continuing life as an international student in Australia is the solution for you.

Transferring to an Australian student visa and enrolling as an International Student is something that you should give serious consideration as it comes with many benefits, some of these include:

1. Get a Student Visa (500) without leaving Australia

As an international student you will be able to apply for a student visa (500) without having to leave Australia. Your student visa will let you stay in Australia for more than the duration of your course. The total duration of your student visa will depend on the length of your course. Usually a student visa is granted for 1 to 2 months more than the course length to give you a bit of a holiday once you finish your studies. The longer your course the longer your student visa. You can even package together multiple courses and get a student visa lasting up to 5 years!

2. You can keep working

Your student visa will let you work on a part-time basis while your course is being delivered. When your course is not in session (i.e during study breaks and once your course is finished) you will be able to work for as many hours as you want. If you choose to study a master’s in research or a PhD you will be able to work as much as you want.

3. You can study just about anything in Australia

The Australian education system has over 28000 registered courses being offered by more than 1500 schools, colleges and universities across Australia. Course offerings range from English lessons for a few months all the way through to a Doctorate in Astrophysics. From this enormous range of options and locations, you will be able to find the course that is perfect for you.

If you want to study a practical course in an industry with job opportunities, you might be interested in obtaining one of the following:

4. Obtain a globally recognised Qualification

Australia holds a top ten global ranking for its standard of educational outcomes. Completing your studies in Australia will provide you with an internationally recognised Qualification and the technical and practical training for you to work anywhere in the world.

5. You can save your second or third work & holiday visa for later

You can choose to take a study break between your work and holiday visas. If you obtain an Australian qualification before applying for your second of third work and holiday visa you can use this qualification and improve your chances of landing a better paying or more rewarding full time job for the duration of your subsequent Work & Holiday visa. If you have completed your 3 or 6 months of eligible work, you can choose to study and then apply for your second or third work and holiday visa at a later date, provided you are still within the Work & Holiday visa age limit.

6. You can apply for a Graduate Visa (485)

If you select an eligible course you will be able to apply for a Gradate Visa (485) that will allow you to work full time after you have completed your studies. A graduate visa allows you to gain practical full-time work experience for between 18 months and 4 years. The Graduate visa exists so that you can apply the skills that you have learnt during your Australian studies. Usually you will need to study for at least 2 years before being able to apply for a graduate visa.

7. You can improve your chances of gaining permanent residency

If you are hoping to eventually gain permanent residency in Australia, obtaining an Australian qualification can be a significant benefit. Australia’s skilled migration policy and in particular the Skills Select visa points system grants additional points to visa applicants that have obtained an Australian Qualification and meet the Australian Study Requirements. Also, if English is not your first language you will find that continuing your studies in Australia will give you more time to improve your English language proficiency, which can also qualify you for additional visa points.
